LUCI CITIES AND LIGHTING AWARDS 2024

LUCI is an international urban network for urban lighting. Since 2002, LUCI has brought together local partners worldwide who use light as a tool for social, cultural and economic development.

Cities include members from the lighting ecosystem such as the lighting industry, design agencies, light artists and light festival organizers, research institutes and many others.

Lighting is an important asset for cities to stay safe in the evenings and at night. It is also a valuable public good that is carefully used at the right time and at the right level. As cities face climate change and other major challenges, including new patterns of work, leisure and mobility driven by growing urbanization and emerging technologies, the way public spaces are used is changing, especially at night. Through events, exchange, collaboration and advocacy, LUCI offers an unprecedented opportunity to shed more light on cities and improve the quality of nightlife. The LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards, tailored for cities and local authorities, highlights different urban lighting projects. These awards focus on lighting designs that have a positive impact on the economic, social and cultural development of cities. The awards celebrate cities that have implemented urban lighting projects that aim to improve sustainability and citizens’ quality of life in the spirit of the LUCI Declaration on the Future of Urban Lighting.

Awarded cooperation

For the runner-up in the 2024 competition, Hamngatan and MDU plaza – City of Eskilstuna (Sweden), Tehomet delivered the poles in cooperation with Flux AB. The space was transformed into a dynamic square that seamlessly combines the comforts of the city and the beauty of nature. The close collaboration of the design team led to innovative overhead contact line lighting at pedestrian crossings and seamless integration of lighting in landscape design. The project promotes connectivity and safety, prioritizing an ecological approach such as full switches and minimal, warm lighting. Overall, this cooperation contributes to both social and environmental sustainability.
