The first Martti smart pole pilot in Finland has been installed in Mikkeli, introducing a proactive solution for improving pedestrian crossing safety. This multifunctional system provides clear and timely warnings to drivers about approaching pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing safety for all road users.
The pilot project is being carried out in cooperation between Tehomet and ESE-Tekniikka Oy at the intersection of Porrassalmenkatu and Olkkolankatu, near Lyseo School.
Martti utilizes advanced machine vision technology to detect even the smallest road users within a predefined area and automatically activate the pole’s flashing warning lights. The elevated warning lights ensure that drivers can recognize the situation from a considerable distance. In addition, the pole is equipped with a loudspeaker and a luminaire specifically designed for pedestrian crossing illumination, further improving visibility and awareness. The solution is powered by adaptive artificial intelligence and edge computing.
Privacy has been a key consideration from the very beginning: individuals are not identified, and no personal data is stored. Martti does not monitor people—it protects them tirelessly.
Martti is the result of extensive product development and represents a new generation of smart poles designed to integrate multiple systems, improve shared infrastructure utilization, and enable entirely new services.
