When one of Finland’s most interesting new residential areas was built in Hartaanselänranta, Oulu, there was a need for lighting solutions that support a high-quality cityscape and the area’s distinctive identity. Tehomet delivered an extensive set of decorative wooden poles to the site, which combine modern infrastructure construction and the aesthetics of northern nature.
A new district in the Oulujoki delta
Hartaanselänranta is a new residential area being built in the estuary landscapes of the Oulujoki River, which combines modern urban living, recreational areas and the historical environment of the area. The area includes Hartaanranta, Vaakunakylä and Lehtokylä, as well as the parks, coastal routes and public urban spaces that connect them.
In the summer of 2025, Hartaanselänranta became the national spotlight as an event area for the Finnish Housing Fair. The new residential areas, waterfront boulevards and Hartaansilta bridge form an impressive entity in which the details of the environment play a significant role in building comfort and identity.
Aiming for a uniform and high-quality environment
In the construction of the Housing Fair area, the aim was to invest in the quality and visual appearance of public outdoor spaces. The lighting solutions had to be suitable for both the urban waterfront environment and the surrounding northern nature.
Tehomet was selected to deliver a wide range of high-quality and durable wooden pole solutions to the site, which support the area’s modern yet natural architecture.

Versatile pole solutions for different environments
Tehomet’s strength lies in its customer-specific and versatile product solutions, which can be combined to create a uniform and recognizable look for the area. The Hartaansilta project utilized several decorative wooden pole models in different parts of the area.
4 and 6-metre-high Keksi poles were delivered to the Hartaansilta area, the design of which was inspired by the log float tool used to move logs. Some of the poles were implemented in groups of three poles using the Tripla model. The area also included the more traditional Ruka and Koli poles.
More special solutions are represented by multi-purpose poles based on the Inari model and Reimari poles implemented in the Vaakunakylä area. An 8-metre-high Orrella pole was installed in the Raakkula playground, with bird-like luminaires that create their own look for the area.
The majority of the wooden poles in the fair area are 6-metre-high Seka models, which bind the different parts of the area together into a coherent whole.
Responsible wood production
Tehomet combines Finnish wood expertise, sustainable design and responsible manufacturing to create lighting solutions that leave a small mark on the environment itself, but a timeless mark on the urban environment. The Oulu Housing Fair 2025 introduced thousands of visitors to a new kind of urban living in the northern environment. Tehomet’s wooden pole solutions are a visible part of the area’s identity and help to create a uniform, high-quality and long-lasting cityscape.
Hartaanselänranta is an example of how carefully selected lighting and environmental solutions can support the look and user experience of an entire city district for decades to come.
