A new kind of rest stop

About 70 km north of Oslo, along the E6 highway at Strandlykkja, a series of new rest areas invite travellers to pause and experience both the natural scenery and Scandinavian design innovation. At the heart of the design is a striking installation: twelve-metre-high wooden masts, each individually tilted to create a fan-like formation echoing the road’s curvature.

These masts are not just structural landmarks — they are dynamic, light-emitting sculptures.

Dynamic light inspired by nature

Each mast is topped with mirrored glass panels that conceal a DMX-controlled LED matrix. As the lights shift and reflect, they create the impression of the sun moving above the mountains. By day, the mirrors capture the surrounding landscape; by night, the installation becomes a kinetic play of light, movement, and reflection.

The installation is framed by stainless steel poles by Tehomet, adding contrast and precision to the natural wood structures.

Designed for safety and wellbeing

The Pulse project is about more than aesthetics. Its primary purpose is to enhance road safety by encouraging drivers to take stimulating breaks, remain alert, and rest comfortably.

  • Pedestrian routes are designed with optimal lighting levels for safety and comfort.
  • Truck parking areas use lower-intensity lighting to provide drivers with calm, restorative spaces.
  • Entrances and exits are illuminated with higher intensity to ensure clear visibility.
  • Glare control ensures passing motorists are not distracted.

In this way, design, technology, and wellbeing intersect to support safer journeys.

Collaboration and vision

The Pulse installation was designed by Morten Jensen and Eli Janne Sauar from ÅF Lighting (Norway), with Tehomet supplying the custom wooden masts and stainless steel poles.

Photography by Ilpo Aalto and Tomasz Majewski captures the project’s sculptural and atmospheric qualities.
