You are currently viewing Rakovalkea – Fires of Lapland Reimagined in Light

At the heart of Rovaniemi, just south of the Arctic Circle, tradition meets technology in a lighting installation that draws its essence from the Rakovalkea — the spellbinding campfire of Finland’s Lapland. This cultural symbol of warmth and gathering has been transformed into a lighting pole concept that brings the spirit of northern fires into an urban environment.

Design Concept

The Rakovalkea lighting poles combine steel, wood, and LED technology to reinterpret the form, colors, and movement of the traditional campfire. Using RGB LED programming, the poles shift in both tone and intensity depending on the season and cultural moment. They are not static luminaires but dynamic installations, alive with the rhythm of the year.

Lighting Effects

  • In autumn and around Christmas, the poles radiate warm, fiery hues, evoking the glow of burning logs.
  • In the depths of midwinter, they shift to cool, twilight-inspired tones, echoing the “blue moment” of Lapland’s polar dusk.
  • Through indirect illumination, the poles mimic the campfire’s glow — spreading a gentle, uneven radiance that creates both atmosphere and orientation in the pedestrian environment.

The Rakovalkea poles go beyond functional lighting. They serve as urban storytelling elements, connecting modern Rovaniemi with the traditions of Lapland. For residents and visitors alike, they create a sense of place rooted in culture, memory, and the natural cycle of light.
