Vantaa’s most popular nature site embraces sustainable design

Lake Kuusijärvi has been the city’s flagship outdoor destination since the 1970s. Today it offers Finland’s largest urban swimming beach, winter ski trails and direct access to Sipoonkorpi National Park via the 126-metre Sudentassu Bridge. The surrounding forest landscape includes diverse habitats and old-growth areas, making design choices especially sensitive.

Wooden Poles – A Natural Fit

Tehomet supplied Inari, Ruka and Koli poles for trails and parking areas.

“Our poles are made from PEFC-certified Finnish pine with laminated beams and a durable Teknos surface treatment,” says Sami Hämäläinen, Sales Manager, Wooden Poles at Tehomet.

The subdued colour palette ensures the poles blend naturally into the environment.

Lighting with Atmosphere

Lighting Design Collective’s Jari Vuorinen explains that wood created a more authentic solution than metal. The design combines route lighting with selective spotlights, using varied pole heights to create rhythm and contrast.

“By day the rectangular profiles give the poles a clear identity, while at night they remain discreet and atmospheric,” Vuorinen notes.

Tailored to Each Path

Skiing routes use cooler tones for clarity and safety.
Leisure paths use warmer light for a welcoming mood.

Landscape architect Petra Tammisto emphasises that the aim was subtle, non-intrusive lighting that supports both safety and atmosphere.

Seamless Cooperation

City supervisor Ismo Arminen confirms that wooden poles require no special maintenance, and annual inspections are straightforward. Designers highlight Tehomet’s quick technical support and detailed drawings, which simplified collaboration.
