In 2012, Helsinki was celebrated as the World Design Capital. As part of the year’s program, the event Hidden Gardens of Light transformed the city’s Market Square area into a design showcase. The initiative highlighted how creative design can enrich public space, merging function with storytelling.

Designer Sami Huuskonen collaborated with Tehomet to create the light installation Figures. The concept transformed wooden light poles into a playful “tourist group” – characters appearing to ask for directions or hum quietly in front of Helsinki Cathedral on chilly November evenings.

Beyond lighting, the installation sparked joy and engagement. The figures added humor, warmth, and identity to the urban environment, while fulfilling their role as functional lighting elements. After the event, the City of Helsinki adopted the installation permanently. Thanks to platform-mounted bases, the figures are easily relocated. Over the years, they have “travelled” across Helsinki – from cultural landmarks like the Finlandia building to welcoming visitors at Tehomet’s own premises in Kangasniemi.
